The wiki page on this guy has interesting info that the Times left out, such as
a) his obvious masculine interests and prior relationships with women clashed with the public's idea that sex change candidates should be basically gay men
b) later in life he made the claim, popular with many MTTs, that he had an intersex condition which is of course extremely unlikely if he was able to father 2 children.
Imagine a female getting the opportunities to be a pilot and racer back then. These obits are so awkward
